Johan published a post on google+ that went "cosmic" with over 168 comments on "14 ways to Learn How to Helpfully Ride The Coattails of Google+ influencers"  We will be discussing his strategy and how it worked out. My initial contact with Johan came from a Pinterest conversation on Google+ where we were talking with Guy Kawasaki of former Apple fame currently "What The Plus" e-book , Enchantment and Alltop notoriety, about the status of Pinteresst in the social media hierarchy. Conversations on Google+ have now turned global and we are connecting the social media dots on blogtalkradio.

Johan will share the trials and practice it has taken to be able to communicate with anyone around the world on Google+  This is what he says about the platform "Never in my life have I come across such an resistant free platform. I am able to communicate with the most influential to the latest newbie…..

This is a social media principle I ascribe to: Before you sell you need to create cultivation pools where you can nature long term trusting relationships…..The focus for me was not on return on investment anymore. Input vs output bull. I became like an artist. I did what I love first. At all cost before I chase anything. Now the fun started….

I am challenged by new methods. How do I use these tools to brand businesses and individuals. I tend see communication opportunities in a strategy and branding way. This means that I easily identify new technology that solves these problems. Internal and external. It's natural for me to package various communications solution in a user friendly way."

This interview starts our series with people from around the world where we can discuss the countries and cities we visited on our journey around the world.  Talking with local people puts a new perspective on the things we saw and experienced.  Johan has cleared up many of my questions in our e-mail and skype conversations getting to know one another as global connectors.

Johan and his family live in Simonstown which is about 45 minutes outside Cape Town, South Africa. Some may not know much about Cape Town or South Africa.  Cricket, famous golfers, Camps Beach, Nelson Mandela, Apartheid are a few things you might think about when someone says, South Africa.  There is so much more like world class shopping, diving with the sharks, safaris with the big five and elephant rides on the reserve are things that make this destination a place you want to put on your radar or even your bucket list.  Johan's wife Elmarie and daughter Nandi are very busy managing their vacation rental business, Cape Holiday Home Rentals with over 300 beautiful properties and might be able to help you make a dream come true.  Check out some of the beautiful homes for rent in the Cape Town, South Africa area on Pinterest .

The Hunger Games and Easter

The Hunger Games and Easter

"Sacrilege" shouts the crowd waiting for the games to begin.

Some may think I am a "Fruit Loop" in a "Cheerio" world and the thought might go as far as a "Frosted Flake" as you read on about The Hunger Games and Easter but give it a chance.  Going to movies, reading books, experiencing the world has taken on a whole new meaning as I dig deeper to connect the dots in everything I do.  Could be that the final judgment of my work will be complete "space case."  Cast your vote in the comments at the end and share what you think about this movie review, let it rip.

The Hunger Games is a box office phenomenon raking in more than three hundred-sixty million dollars and the numbers are still rising.  The only reason my husband and I went to see this movie came down to the fact we did not want to see any of the other 10 choices playing at our local theater.   I posted a question on facebook as to what movie to see on date day and three out of ten responses said "The Hunger Games." Spring is not the season for "great movies" so the time is right to attract movie goers that might NEVER have gone to see this YA or Young Adult film.   As a vintage player in this 21 century world I initially heard about The Hunger Games as a mention in broadcasting at the 2012 Academy Awards. By the name I did not think it was something I would like to see.  I must have been under a rock in the YA world since the book series started in 2008 by best selling author, Suzanne Collins.  The Hunger Games book trilogy includes "The Hunger Games, Catching Fire (film to be released November 2013) and Mocking Jay."   Over 23 million copies are in print in the United States alone and the series has developed a massive global following.  It was on the New York TImes Best seller list more than 160 consecutive weeks.  The books are published by Scholastic Press internet portal and book club for the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books.  Visions from my past came to my mind when I discovered Scholastic Press published the trilogy. The light came on ONLY after watching the film this was a "Harry Potter, Twilight" reader/viewer and I had just been caught up in the latest buzz. For the record, I was a Harry Potter fan before he was cool.

Reading the book before the movie is a mantra that many people subscribe to.   Fortunately, I went to see The Hunger Games with absolutely no preconceived ideas of the plot, the characters or the message of the film and was delighted with my movie going experiencePopcorn bag notes s 150x112 The Hunger Games and Easter as I had no expectations.  The title made me squirm because reality shows are of no interest to me, at all.   After watching Survivor the 1st season I decided that teaching viewers, including children of all ages to lie, create false alliances, misrepresent and manipulate people with premeditation and malice for a million dollars was something that I did not need to waste my time with.  Consider "The Bachelor" are you kidding me?  It is hard to fathom the beautiful girls going on National TV to be humiliated and duped in front of the world.  To think you are going to find your soul mate in six weeks and have it be a lasting relationship is really the definition of having your "light bulb burnt out™."  What can I say about the Housewives series, if you have ever watched one episode you will know that money and fame creates deranged behavior beyond comprehension. The stage had been set for me to watch The Hunger Games with an open mind, except for the dislike of reality show and get whatever message there was for me to absorb. A steno note pad is a standard issue for going to the movies however, I forgot to bring it and all I had in my purse was an envelope which I opened to remind myself of important quotes and thoughts.  As the plot thickened I had to tear open my popcorn bag to continue with my note taking so I could remember what stood out during the first viewing of the film.

Suzanne Collins wrote this book for Young Adults however the message is for ALL mankind. Her background as a screen play writer made the transition into film appear seamless.  The movie gets a two thumbs up from me as I connected today, Roman behavior and Easter dots all from one Hunger survival game. I only cried three times and left wanting to know "the rest of the story."

Hunger Games US cover small The Hunger Games and EasterThe film is set in a "1984" dystopian type atmosphere in the country of Panem after a terrible war on the futuristic ruins of North America. The Hunger Games is the story of 24 children known as "tributes"  selected through a lottery system known as the Reaping, to represent their District.  The game includes slaughtering one another in a terrifying government sponsored reality TV competition which was considered a national media event.  The games are a twisted punishment for a past uprising of the people and an ongoing  intimidation tactic by the government.

The story deals with brutality, and mortality of young characters from 12 districts.  The selection process starts the saga and the viewer is riveted to the seat the entire length of the film leaving exhausted from the journey.

The winning tribute or survivor and his/her corresponding district is then rewarded handsomely with food and plenty. The purpose of the Hunger Games is to provide entertainment for the Capitol and to serve as a warning to the Districts to remind them of the Capitol's power and lack of remorse for the past uprising.

The Hunger Games explores issues of life, love, survival, death, and corruption. Watching teenagers in peril and starvation is uncomfortable to say the least but to see the heroism and fight come alive for a cause is thrilling as the plot unfolds.

The storyline depicts the games of life through the ages comparing the Roman gladiators to the "tributes."  We see those who have been highly trained their entire lives to survive as participants, be pitted against those who only have innate survival instincts to pull upon as their resources to make it through.  There are impossible choices that have to be made in the arena against life and love.

Let the games begin…. The theme through the film repeats “Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor.

As the tributes prepare for their Roman gladiator type experience they are wined and dined in luxury they have never experienced.  Basically they are having a "last supper." Twenty-three of the children will die so the welcome oratory exclaims "Tributes we welcome you and we solute you for your courage and sacrifice."  This was not a choice for any of the children it was for the glory of those in power and for entertainment and intimidation to stop future uprisings.  If everyone stopped watching there would be no games so it appears the public holds to key to the success or failure of the sentiment. The game is designed and manipulated to create desire to watch the killing and how it is played.  Woody Harrelson plays Haymitch, a former winner 20 year ago from the poorest Distric 12.  He tells Peeta, played by Josh Hutcherson, the bakers son from District 12 as they eat, he should "embrace the probability of your eminent death."  Haymith tells Katniss Everdeen, the girl tribute from District 12, played by Jennifer Lawrence, she should try and get people to like her so she can have sponsors who will send life lines to her in the field as the war rages. The concept of creating an image or doing something that was not honest was foreign to Katniss but she listens and responds to do what she needed to do to try and survive with poise.  After spending time with Katniss, her mentor, Haymith tells her to be herself because she is so strong.

Katniss and Peeta the two tributes from District 12 discuss who they are and how they want to play the game to survive  They know that they do not want the game to turn them into something they are not.  This starts the beginning of an alliance and maybe more.  Katniss has left her widowed Mother, and 12 year old sister at home with her soul mate and hunting friend Gale, played by Liam Hemsworth.

From the Capitol's standpoint the games at the arena were partly staged to provide a distraction for the growing, underemployed and hunger of the people, just like the ancient Roman working class and the gladiators.  Focusing on the games kept the public from rioting in the street. In the film we see similar Roman games of gladiator vs gladiator and even gladiator vs computer generated animals to keep the public from thinking about what is really going on all around them and the devastation of the country.

As the games progress and the alliances are formed there appears to be a support sentiment that the President did not like.   The oppressors state that "the only thing stronger than fear is HOPE." so they decide to change the rules of the game to manipulate the crowd and their feelings about the game.  They want to give the public something to cheer for, an underdog.  The games are scripted just like the reality TV shows of today and the rules change when the sentiment moves.  When watching he movie you can decide if the change in engagement created hope and was that good for the oppressor or bad?

Watching the movie the question arises how anyone can see entertainment and joy from watching people kill each other.  Think about the "mind games" that go on in life and relationships in general.  Children of divorce with parents deceiving each other for custody, business alliances to capture market share, couples trying to justify behavior.  This film makes one think about the games people play under many circumstance and then how distracted we get about injustice and cruelty that takes place with these games.

The Hunger games very possibly could awaken the viewing public and take away the numb feeling about what is going on in the world today by the themes that are present in the film.

  1. Family Love and dedication to helping those that are in emotional need.
  2. Hunger, physical and mental
  3. Love triangle confusion
  4. Rules of engagement and living with change
  5. Fear and Hope
  6. Knowing who you are and staying true to that ideal
  7. Doing uncomfortable things we don't want to do
  8. Romeo and Juliet devotion
  9. Judas complex
  10. External control of our lives
  11. Standing out
  12. Creating a plan for survival aka strategy
  13. Taking the high road
  14. Working with others, creating a team

Wouldn't it be great if every person and family that watched this film discussed the 14 or more ideas expressed in the movie or the book and applied it to their own individual lives?   I believe that The Hunger games is possibly an  Academy award winning film which is going to make a difference in the way people think.  History is history so looking back at the Roman times and parables in the Bible a few thoughts about The Hunger Games and Easter might include:

Easter and The Hunger Games

Hope best s 150x112 The Hunger Games and Easter

Was Judas the ultimate alliance partner to end competition from Jesus and his healing to turn attention back to Caesar?

What did Judas receive for showing the chief priests who Jesus was?

Could there possibly be a connection in the crowd wanting Jesus to be crucified and the mentality of those watching as the children murdered one another?

Was there a possibility of a game changer when Pilate asked the crowd if they really wanted a death sentence?

Did the termination of the ultimate good, Jesus, extinguish the HOPE that resides in many people today?

Did the crucifixion need to take place to show the public the way?

Ponder the different possible endings as related to The Hunger Games.

What good ideas are we trying to kill today?

The story from the King James Version of the Bible gives the answers to the questions.

Matthew 26:14-15

14 Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, 15 And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him (Jesus) unto  you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver.

The alliance.

Mark 14:43, 45

43 while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords, and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.  45 And as soon has he was come, he goeth straightway to him and saith, Maser, master and kissed him.  They they laid their hands on him, and took him.

The sign, the kiss of betrayal.

Matthew 27:1-7

1.  When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death; 2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.  3  Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.  And they said, What is that to us?  see though to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

Remorse for the alliance and betrayal.

John 19:1 Pilate, 10, 11 (to:), 12 (to1st:), 14-18 and he, 38, 41, 42

1.  Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.  10  Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me?  knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?  11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above:

Pilate could release Jesus humanly. Jesus explained the real power.

12 And from thence forth Pilate sought to release him: 14 and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!  15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King?

Pilate gave the power to the people to release Jesus but they wanted to CRUCIFY him.

The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Crowd loyalty was to Caesar.

16  Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified.  And they took Jesus, and led him away.  17  And he bearing his cross went forth into a place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:  18 Where they crucified him and tow other with him on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

Jesus was crucified.

Matthew 28:1,5,6,7

1 In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.  5  And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  6  He is not here; for he is risen, as he said.  Come, see the place where the Lord lay.  7.. and go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead:

Jesus arose from the dead proving that life was eternal giving men HOPE.

Luke 24:50-52

50  And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.  51  And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.  52 And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

I Corinthians 15:57 thanks

57 thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Victory over evil even though the king of the Jews was crucified what he stood for lived on.

This film shares how to act strategically to possibly combat established power structures, how to take the high ground and position yourself to survive.  The controversial topics showing an imperfect world brings the movie goers to a place of questioning and a desire for more. I encourage you to see the film, discuss it with your family and friends and make a difference.

Do you think there is a connection between the people in Jesus time and the crowd in Panem?  The Hunger Games and Easter, what do you think?

Pinterest and Safe Pinning!

Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites to date.  It is like an electronic bulletin board where you can pin things that interest you, engage in comments on things that you like and drive viewers to your website with photos and links that you pin.  It's fun, it's fast and addicting!

An exciting place to share photos, links and great ideas!  I can say, I am addicted to the photos at Pinterest!  The color is amazing and then being able to click the photo to read more about it with the back link makes it an incredible learning tool!  I am learning about gardening, cooking, travel, helpful household hints, crafts, home improvement and on and on.  There is no limit to what people can pin and share online with Pinterest.

Just know 12 step programs are available for everything and after you try Pinterest you might need one!

Remember….. there is "Danger Will Robinson" to pin without thinking!

Before you run off and start pinning there is a word to the wise……Don't pin without protection!  "Safe pinning" has to be part of your participation best practice when engaging on Pinterest there could be severe legal problems with copyright violations if you are pinning without protection! Take the times to READ the Terms of Service which are changing April 6, 2012 for the better.

Learning yet another social media platform is almost too much for anyone in business today.  It seems like we just get comfortable with how things run on facebook, twitter or Google+ and they change the format along the rules so it's like a never ending journey of new information. I am sorry to say this is the norm and in the 21st century as the Cosmic Shift Happens this is just the way things are going to run, constant change.

We are living in a beta test world and the destination is yet to be determine so strap in, learn the rules, buckle up and hang on.

Take a little time to read this post on how 11 huge brands are using Pinterest.  I uncovered a story about Kate Spade and her team pinning a Martha Stewart  St. Patrick's Day straw and neglecting to give her credit or link back to her blog post.  Now this is the SERIOUS copyright issue that you have to be aware of.  It might be gone by the time I publish this post but it was there before St. Patricks Day through March 29th and you can see the screen shots below. Try this link to see for yourself. Martha Stewart's team telling Kate Spade's team to link to the Martha Stewart blog post. Even a reader commented on the mistake. 254 Kate Spade followers repinned the Martha Stewart Straws and there was no back link to Martha Stewart.  This is not good!

ar133160716921995 Pinterest and Safe Pinning!

This is the first in a series of posts on Pinterest, both the good and the bad.

In the blogosphere there are many types of bloggers with individual styles who have similar messages however, their information is presented in a different way.  Pinterest has taken on a love/hate position with many involved in social media so this post is to share the WARNINGS and DANGERS involved at Pinterest taking place right now with HUGE players not understanding the rules.  Therefore DEAR Reader… please take some time to read the links for more powerful information and learn for yourself how you might be able to use this venue to share your message.  Don't let FEAR take away something that could possibly be fun and profitable if you KNOW and USE the rules found in any copyright situations.

Pinterest appears to be the latest greatest new Internet venue taking off faster than facebook or google+ during the same initial beta releases.  Inman Next has done several webinars showing how real estate agents can use Pinterest in their business to connect with people.  Follow the Inman link to see the webinar and what they are sharing about Pinterest.  You will find there are good and bad reviews on this social media platform.  If you create your own blog posts, you take your own pictures and know your community and what it has to offer this is the perfect place for you to share that information that YOU create yourself.  You can link to your community websites and pin activities to help the consumer find out more about your neighborhood if you are in the real estate industry.  This activity applies to businesses within a community as well, sharing information that is going on around them.

Pinterest is VISUAL, it's fun and you can spend hours clicking on the photos which link to correctly posted websites where you can learn all about something you are interested in.  The graphics are what stimulate the desire to find out more about the picture and what it represents. Your mission, should you accept it, is to provide beautiful photos so people will want to click through the picture and see what you are selling or providing as valuable content. The click through should go right to your website if you want to promote a business product or service.

The GOOD news is learning is less than an hour investment in time to figure out how Pinterest works and how fun it is.

The BAD news is you can get in real copyright trouble if you are pinning photos and images that are not yours and have not been approved for pinning… so learning the rules of "proper pinning" is of upmost importance.

Advertising Lawyer Shares How Brands Can Use Pinterest Without Breaking the Law.  He says:

"We're not going to kid you, this risk reduction strategy will significantly limit your ability to pin and re-pin content found on Pinterest to your company's brand page. But unfortunately the way consumers are currently using Pinterest just isn't the same way that your brand will likely be able to use it, given that a brand's commercial use will be much more attractive to potential plaintiffs. Pinterest attempts to limit its own legal liability by providing in its terms that users are only supposed to post or pin content that they own or that they have the right to post. From a practical matter, this may give Pinterest some legal protection, but the same legal protections will not likely protect your brand page since you are directly pinning the images"

Another helpful article share by American Express talks about how a small business can be damaged by Pinterest so reading it is all part of the learning curve which will help you determine whether you want to participate or not based on your own investigations.

The rest of the Kate Spade pinterest board story.…. I read the post on 11 ways to use pinterest and saw them talk about Kate Spade and how she was usin the boards. Kate Spade did not link to the Martha Stewart post Pinterest and Safe Pinning!

I went to the boards and found a cute St.Patricks Day Straw in an orange soda.  I was going to pin it and saw the message from Martha Stewart's team letting her know that the pin should link back to their website.  It didn't.  This could be a genuine copyright violation because the Kate Spade team took the graphic without the link back to the original post.  If the big guys are making this mistake consider this a red flag that others will be doing it too and this mistake goes with the territory on the Internet.  As long as YOU are not doing it you should be fine.  The same photo of Martha's Shamrock Straws had been re-blogged on Tumbler 459 times and each person was NOT linking the Martha Stewart graphic to their own websites.  THAT is a NO NO.  Bottom line is to be careful with what you are repinning and making sure it links back to the source and you have the right to re-pin.

The article 11 huge brands are using Pinterest…..shares:

"1. Showcase your products

Kate Spade does this particularly well, creating mood boards that showcase its products within different themes.

The label's personality is bright and colorful, which is reflected in the naming of the boards – quite literally. This might just appear to be a naming convention, but the repetition means that the message sticks."

Kate Spade's team got the Martha Stewart Staws from night on the run tumblr where you can see how many people reblogged it on Tumbler not linking to Martha Stewart's blog post by clicking that link.

It Was The Best of Times, It Was The Worst Of Times – 2011

2011 was the best of times and was the worst of times for the Riley family.

Sharing some of my deepest thoughts, I am letting you know, dear reader, I was so happy to go to bed in 2011 and wake up to a new day and a new year and a new way of thinking! I have seen many posts on facebook and google+ with similar feelings and I am excited to try and get to a higher altitude with you in 2012.

Controlling  thoughts and emotions can be a challenge throughout life and this is the year…. 2012  where things are going to boil (212 degrees).

Pondering the concept of turning up the heat made me think of separating the silver and gold from the dross.  Things have to get heated up to purify and refine the silver and gold to get to the pure substance. The dross or the imperfect materials have to be purged to get to the gold.  Another thought about heat comes from running a steam engine.  The heat has to be up to the 212 to make it run!  So turning up the heat in 2012 to refine the gold and run the engine is going to be exciting.

As members of the human race we are all connected in one way or another. It is my humble opinion we are all one, through the creator.   We are in charge of our thoughts and have complete control of where they go.  Life is about demonstrating the skill in exercising what we will and won't think and accept in our thoughts.  We can dwell on the positive or we can submerse ourselves in the negative.  We do manifest what we believe.

Our cup can be half empty or it can be half full.  When you think about it… whether the cup is half full or half empty with liquid, it is ALWAYS overflowing with air.  You see your cup runs over no matter what, you just have to decide to accept that fact or not.  You are in charge!  Self talk helps us be victorious over those disturbing thoughts that take our peace away.   This year I am going to try each day to only listen to positive messages and know that my cup is running over being grateful for what I have and my ability to read, think and reason through any cow pie out there.  I look forward to sharing with you on our 2012 journey.

A journey around the world was on our "Goddard List"  (aka bucket list) and we saw the world for the best of times.  We started to think global and act local.

A near death experience with a young family member made it the worst of times. I won't go into the details at this point  but we all learned from it and continue to appreciate new sides of all situations and gratitude for everything.

Learning from the past, our family has been through financial difficulties where we even sold our furniture to eat so I know the pain of having no money and not knowing where the next meal was coming from.  We were basically on numb getting through each day one moment at a time.  Getting over the embarrassment and humiliation of this difficult financial life experience in 1992 helped me relate to others in similar situations. I can look anyone in the eye and say "I KNOW how you feel and this is what we did." I am happy to report we worked through the financial meltdown one step at a time never declaring bankruptcy and paying back every dime we owed through Consumer Credit Counseling.  Experiences are trials that help us grow and make us stronger and gives us the ability to help others through similar situations.

On the voyage around the world I took lessons from the universe and completely listened as we embarked on foreign ground.  A new book from the Cosmic Cow Pie series is emerging with the global lessons which should be launched in 2012 "Connecting The Dots Around The World."  It will inculcate lessons from major land marks we visited.  The book will have pictures from sites like India and Brazil that have been photographed by thousands and I will share a message to help trigger a change of thought when experiencing a stress situation.  The book will take global icons and the message should help the reader think about new "coping skills" to navigate the cow pies of life that continue to be in the way no matter what year it is.  Life really is about how we put our boots on and get through those piles.  SSDD  Same Stuff Different Day applies as nothing is constant but change.

One of my favorite quotes applies to everything happening today in a most timely manner,  "You can't change the wind you can only adjust your sails."

As the winds of change blow they bring new challenges and new ways of thinking.  When trying to modify thoughts to stay with the positive, build a bridge, walk on over it and never look back.

If you are trying to think only positive and good thoughts in 2012 so you can get that steam engine running you can't have negative energy coming in taking away from your ability to go forward.  Whatever was in the past needs to be in the past and you need to forget it.  Throw it over that bridge and don't think about it again.  Forgiveness means that you forget it ever happened.  If you keep bringing up the past you can't live in the present.

The present is here and now and will reflect the way you think.

Don't be thinking about old issues.  If you can resolve a conflict just DO IT.  If you can't, simply build that bridge and walk on over it.

Let's make 2012 the best of times together.
